Project based teaching method is gaining popularity and acceptance in how students would gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended or longer period of time so that they can investigate and respond to a real, engaging, and complex questions, challenge or problem. Through this systematic teaching method, students are get to be involved in deep investigations of complex questions, of which the system is considered innovative. Simply described, this system has something to do with how students will be inspired to question actively, think and reason deeply, in order to gain knowledge and skills.
It is further described as a dynamism happening in classrooms where real world problems and challenges are explored by the students that would lead them to gain a deeper knowledge.
To fully engage in this type of experience based learning system is the community school, where this kind of learning center would create a safe, supportive and stable environment for students to have the possibility of engaging fully in an experience based learning, which would lead to a connection of academic excellence and community impact.
In a community school, there is a partnership created between the institution, families and the community, with the goal of inspiring students to develop a sense of purpose while striving for academic excellence. With this method, students are developed to have strong character, to become lifelong learners, and to empower them as socially conscious global citizens, all of which are necessary to be a success in this changing times.
By combining social and emotional learning with academic excellence, this method has acknowledged its importance in the success of a student.
There is a meeting in this system, of small group of students, with the assistance of an adult in their building. A staff member called village leader will provide guidance for the academic success of students by connecting them with supports thus meeting their needs, monitor their progress and coaching understanding. Time will also be spent in relationship building, in giving support to the social emotional needs of the students, and in the creation of space for learning through readiness and mindfulness.
The materials and instructional strategies of this project based curriculum will give students an engaging and ownership of their academic skills.
For a student to reach high academic expectation, he or she must be ready to learn, and this is what inspired community based schools. Other important factors of which the method is anchored upon are the ideas that a student will do better if her or his family will do better, that there is an interconnection of communities and schools, that a child’s life will have a difference with the school’s inclusion, and that the success of the child is dependent on his or her whole development.
